Canarm LTD Calibre ORB 48 Frosted Glass 1 Bulb Light Kit, 48-Inch Ceiling Fan with 3 Blades, Walnut/Medium Oak Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)There being no other review for this fan, I feel obligated to let prospective buyers know that they should move on and don't look back! But to be fair, this is a nice looking fan (which gets it 2 instead of 1 star!). So if you intend to have someone else put it up, then it might work for you. But you should ensure that the kids are not in earshot and the installer is not a close relative lest they never talk to you again! Yes, installing this fan (and I did 2 of them) is a frustrating experience, even for the experienced DIYer.
I've installed dozens of fans over the years and the job has become increasingly easy with various innovations from most manufacturers. But installing this one took me back 30yrs. Modern fans have a bracket that screws directly into the fan ceiling box, to which the fan down-rod pivot ball simply falls into. A shroud then covers it all up. Very secure and easy to install.
This one has a flat bracket that screws into the ceiling box. You then have to temporarily "hang" the fan on a hook (on the bracket) while completing the wiring. The down-rod pivot ball is supported by the shroud (!), so to complete the install you have to hold the entire weight of the fan while stuffing the control unit and all the wiring into the shroud and trying hook it over 2 screws in the ceiling box bracket. This is incredibly awkward as the wiring & control box is a tight fit (and the fan is quite heavy), and the screws are tight up against the ceiling.
Oh, and they suggest you pre-install the blades before installing the fan but that just makes the job even harder. Fit them after it's up - a bit awkward because this is not exactly a piece of precision engineering (so screw alignment is an issue) but it's easier than dealing with the blades when trying to hook it onto the ceiling bracket.
Finally, the design is such that the fan is entirely supported by 4 small screws at the top of the shroud. Obviously they thought about this and decided to provide a safety wire which is required to be installed on (yet another) hook screwed into the ceiling box support. In other words, yet more hassle.
Anyway, both of my fans are now up. One needed balancing (big wobble), and one has a slightly off-center blade shroud. The remote is one of those add-on units, so does not include a forward/reverse function. Which brings me to the forward/reverse switch on the fan housing - it's not the best quality so must be firming pushed in the desired direction. Not doing so fails to connect one of the motor phases and the fan just hums (no rotation) - I almost returned one until I discovered that!
Summary: Nice looking fan, archaic installation, poor overall manufacturing quality. There are better fans for the money out there....
